MapleStory can be played using alternative input devices such as a compact keyboard or a gamepad. These devices typically have fewer input keys than a standard keyboard, so you may need to adjust your settings to find the perfect setup.

Set Up

Compact keyboards and gamepad devices must be installed and operating correctly on your computer in order to use them in MapleStory. For installation instructions, please visit the product website for your device and install any required drivers or software. For keyboards without arrow keys, ensure that your keyboard can simulate arrow keys through the Function (FN) key or other options.

Compact Keyboards

Compact keyboards include keyboards with a smaller design and fewer keys, typically leaving off the numeric keypad (numpad), Function (FN) keys, home keys or arrow keys. Some of these keys may have functions assigned to them by default, but hotkeys can be changed through the Setting > Key Bindings menu in-game.

To reassign a key, click and drag the function you want onto the preferred key. Character skills can even be dragged from the Skills window directly to the keyboard shortcut menu! Once you're happy, click OK to save the setup.

You may want to assign your hotkeys primarily to the keys 1-5, Q-T, A-G, and Z-B, as in the above example. This way, the majority of your keystrokes are all on one side of the keyboard, reducing any potential strain on your hands and fingers.

Note: Arrow keys used for movement cannot be remapped, but many compact keyboards provide a Function (FN) key that can be toggled so that other keys will act like arrow keys. If available, this will allow you to move your character on keyboards without dedicated arrow keys.

Utilizing in-game commands also reduces the number of functions assigned to your hotkeys. For example, chat commands can be used to change the active chat channel:

  • - All: /s
  • - Alliance: /a or /ally
  • - Buddy: /b or /friend
  • - Group: /gr
  • - Guild: /g
  • - Spouse: /spouse

Some menu hotkeys can also be accessed through the game interface or other menus:

  • - The World Map can be accessed through a button on the mini-map.
  • - The Enhance interface can be accessed through the Inventory window.
  • - The Familiar window can be accessed by double-clicking on Roro the Familiar Manager in the Equip window.
  • - Double-clicking on your character opens the Character Info window.

Gamepads

Gamepads can be used to control your character and use skills while defeating enemies and bosses. This may be a comfortable option for those extended play sessions, though it will still be necessary to utilize a mouse and keyboard for some aspects of the game.

Is it safe to use these devices?

Generally speaking, it is safe to use a non-standard device to play MapleStory as long as the device does not automate gameplay or provide tactical advantages beyond a standard mouse and keyboard. Please be aware that the use of hardware or software features that automate gameplay is strictly prohibited and may result in account penalties.
